Potassium is a mineral which has many properties, although it is principally known for compensating the deficit produced by the taking of laxatives and diuretics. It is the third most abundant mineral in our body and is involved in the reaction of nerves and in the working and healthy maintenance of the muscles.
Together with sodium, potassium regulates the quantity and distribution of water in the body, collaborating in the construction of proteins. Both help the cells to obtain the energy necessary to transport molecules such as glucose and amino acids to their interior. They are also necessary in order to generate and transmit nerve impulses to the muscles.
Potassium is important for the beating of the myocardium (heart), thus maintaining an adequate cardiac rhythm and normal blood pressure.
When one has a potassium deficiency we can encounter symptoms such as the distension of the stomach, muscular weakness, cramps, intense fatigue, low blood pressure and irregular pulse etc. Potassium deficit usually arises in cases of vomiting, diarrhoea and the improper use of laxatives or diuretics.
