According the characteristics of fibre, we can include it in the group of carbohydrates, although due to its numerous characteristics and benefits, we have found it necessary to include it in a separate paragraph.
It differs from the rest of carbohydrates in that it has no caloric content, it solely brings the calories given by the fatty acids liberated upon being fermented by the intestinal flora.
Fibre can be divided into two groups (both being present in foods of vegetable origin, in different proportions): soluble alimentary fibre (on retaining water they provoke a sensation of satiation and regulate the levels of cholesterol and glucose) and insoluble alimentary fibre (which does not retain water and which is also fermentable, although in lesser quantity).
Both types of fibre (present in fruits such as mangos) are beneficial to the digestive system, regulate the intestinal transit and help with the prevention of colon cancer. In addition, among other effects, the adequate consumption of fibre helps control illnesses such as diabetes or hypercholesterolemia.
